The March of Oscar

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. An Uber rich tech dude invites his lifelong "friends" to his private island for a party. Things don't go well. This is nominated for an Oscar in the category of best adapted screenplay because its "adapted" from the first film. Apparently, all sequels go in this category. I do think that writer director Rian Johnson got a bit hosed with this film. First it had a very short theatrical run before it went to live on Netflix. Johnson pushed for another theatrical run but Netflix refused. Now its stuck in Oscar "rules" hell with this. It should be nominated for best picture because it did the theme of roasting entitled people better than Triangle of Sadness. And..and this is the fun part, I didn't want to throw up watching it. Anyway, Daniel Craig returns as Blance alongside Jonelle Monae. Wow the two make a spectacular pair. There was so much that stood out for me but here are a few things. The jokes were subtle and understated. I'm going to watch it again because I probably missed a few. The costumes were to die for. Well not literally but you get the idea. A lot of thought went into the fashion of this film to help inform the audience. I love how Johnson does a flashback with a different angle. That seems to be his thing and it works. Roasting the entitled was brilliant and quite funny. Unlike, Triangle of Sadness there are characters that you like and are rooting for. That's important. You have to have at least one likable character or its a slog. This is something that the Academy struggles with and I do hope they do better in the future. Also, BTW Johnson has a limited series on Peacock starring Natasha Lyonne called Poker Face. My husband and I are really enjoying it. Find Glass Onion on Netflix and that's it at least for now.
