EEAAO -Hot Take on Oscars

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022 US) I know I posted this back in January but since its nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars I thought I would Comment on it some more. I am team Everywhere and here is why you should be too. I think the Academy has/d the best of intentions to elevate the best work. In reality that is not working out that way. To get a nomination a film producer has to expend a great deal of energy and money courting Academy voters with ads, mailers, billboards etc. Part of that includes in person, over a fancy meal, pitch sessions. There is an awful lot wrong with that and much that could and does lead to corruption. Getting even a nomination for your work whether it be Producer/writer or data wrangler increases your value by a lot. So when a rep sits down with a voter there is money on the table. Filmmakers have now been creating the "Oscar" film. A sort of signal to the Academy that they are open for biz. I think the "Oscar" film should be its own genre. I'm not saying its outright corrupt but there is certainly a wink nod there. I'm also not saying its everybody. Here is the deal with marginalized communities. Some producers get a bug up their butt about the Oscars and only work with noms or winners. Why? because that's a selling point to investors. Well how many black female directors have won an Oscar? So there goes the big money for them. This is not in any way allowing for the cream to rise to the top and frankly the audience suffers. Hell we all suffer. The Academy was clearly becoming irrelevant because it was putting forth only the Oscar film and excluding other really good films that deserved it more. Recently there has been a movement to push the Academy to get their poopoo together. Remember #OscarsSoWhite. There has been some movement and Everywhere is evidence of that. This is not in any way a typical "Oscar" film. I know some people didn't like it but it does deserve to be there and Hey it is there. Small progress for sure but it has to be encouraged.

  The Love Witch (2016 US) It’s #FemaleFilmmakerFriday and todays entry is this fantasy from Anna Biller about a witch searching for true love. What I really loved about this is that it feels like it was shot in 1968. Biller really nailed it. I was 10 minutes into the film and I went back to verify that this was actually shot in 2016. Yup! It was. What made the “look” really pop was that it was shot on 35 mm film. Shooting on film is pretty hard. you have to have your poo poo together before you turn on the camera and clearly Biller did. She had a lot to say about the male gaze, fantasy, fear, religion and the Femme Fatale. I could probably write a 10 page film theory paper on this but that would be boring so I will only say it’s there and to watch for it. Although, the film has a lot to say it’s not all ivory tower academic speak. It’s very entertaining. Femme fatales, when done right, are so…dare I say it..Fun.  Entergalactic (2022 US) Based on themes in the music of Kid Kudi this highly stylized animated romance drama also features the songs of Kudi. An Artist moves into a Manhattan apartment and falls in love with his photographer neighbor. Both of them must have been doing good to afford an apartment in Manhattan. The script was solid relationship drama but not particularly stand out. OH but the animation and artwork was just stunning. Every scene was a beautiful tableau that the master of  Mis En Scene, Miyazaki, would be envious of. The artists were particularly adept at movement and color. I thought at first it was rotoscoping a live image because the movement looked so natural, but nope. This was good old fashion talent and no doubt worked off of models. I just loved the color work in this. The soundtrack by Kudi was outstanding and gave the film an extra layer. In fact the animation, color and sound all added to a layered experience to enjoy. BoxTrolls -Hot Hot Take

 BoxTrolls (2014 US) An orphan is raised by creatures living beneath the city of Cheesebridge. When the aristocracy comes for the creatures the boy takes action. Based on the book "Here be Monsters". Laika Studios brings you this dark but relevant story about corruption, entitlement, hypocrisy, and marginalized communities. You will remember Laika from some of their other works such as Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings. I like to call the Oregon based studio a "stop motion factory". I have always despised hypocrites and used the word when I was very young, like 4 yo. Adults were well impressed. Not so impressed when I called them one. I just love stop motion. When you are making it, it's like playing with really expensive dolls. When I was a kid my dolls had quite an involved storyline and backstory so this was a very natural evolution. Don't judge me.
